NO OTHER TIME, NO OTHER PLACE

Curator: Katja Schlenker

Atelier am Eck, Düsseldorf, 2016

Codruța Cernea enjoyed an artist residency in Düsseldorf, from February until March 2016, that inspired her to create a new series of paintings highlighting the border where abstraction meets figurative. The works were part of the solo show NO OTHER TIME, NO OTHER PLACE, on view at Atelier am Eck from March 10th to 20th, curator Katja Schlenker.

The artist describes her stay in Germany as a “sweet tangling between reality and fiction”, a sense of freedom mixed with the feeling of isolation due to the lack of reference points. She further explains how the concept of the exhibition gradually came to life: “I’ve paid close attention to how I was developing new habits and routines in my new environment and tried to precisely identify the sensations and emotions I was experiencing.”

The minimal arrangement of elements, with a subtle human presence, carefully camouflaged into the landscape, hides the identity of the protagonist to mark the moment of encounter, its transiency and intensity, as well as the astonishment of an unexpected discovery. In addition, “there is also the need for clarity, structure, the love of color and visual games resulted from playing with space and depth perception”.

Codruța Cernea is the 10th Romanian artist to take part in the residency program, which was possible with the support of Kulturamt Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf and the Brancovan Palaces Cultural Center, Mogoșoaia.
